ELECTRIC CARS

Sales of used pure electric cars have reached a record high.

The Society of Motor Manufactur­ers and Traders reveals that 14,586 used battery electric cars were bought in the UK during the first three months of the year, more than double the total sold during the same period last year.

NCUTI GATWA

The Rwandan-Scottish actor – best known for playing Eric Effiong in Netflix’s Sex Education – is set for superstard­om after being announced as the new Doctor Who. He succeeds Jodie Whittaker who will be leaving the role at the end of the current run.

EUROVISION

The final of the singing contest takes place in Turin, Italy, tonight, with Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra the favourites to win. The UK’s entry, Sam Ryder’s Space Man, is also predicted to escape the dreaded ‘nul points’ for a change.

The Tory minister has been ridiculed over an interview he gave about the cost of living crisis. In an appearance on BBC Breakfast, the Communitie­s Secretary appeared to say the words “emergency budget” in an American accent, before saying “calm down” in the manner of Harry Enfield’s Scousers sketch.

HAY FEVER TREATMENTS

Some hay fever medicines are in short supply in the UK, owing to the lack of a key ingredient. Stocks of chlorphena­mine maleate, the active ingredient in brands such as Piriton, have been affected. Other hay fever medicines are still available, Boots reports.

THE iPOD

Apple has discontinu­ed its groundbrea­king music player after more than 20 years on the market. The tech giant said it would continue to sell the Touch, the last remaining generation of the iPod on sale, “while supplies last”.

CRISPS

A bag of crisps a day, could see you put on a stone over 12 months, a survey warns. A large grab bag can have upwards of 240 calories yet people didn’t realise what that can do to waistlines, a poll of 2,000 adults by social change charity Nesta, found.
