TEDDY Sheringham believes Erik ten Hag faces the toughest job in the Premier League next season.

Huge changes are expected to be made to the United squad this summer, with the Dutchman set to oversee one of the biggest resets in the club’s recent history.

Although he will arrive at Old Trafford with an army of talented players ready and waiting, former Reds striker Sheringham believes the size of the challenge facing Ten Hag is enormous.

“I think he has got the toughest of all the jobs in the Premier League next season,” Sheringham told M.E.N. Sport. “He has got to turn this boat around that is Man United and it is cascading out of control week by week.

“I think he has got to be a big man to turn the ship around and get it sailing in the right direction. There are a lot of egos at Man United that are not pulling their weight at the moment, and if they are pulling their weight it is in the wrong direction.

“But that is the case from the top of the club down.

“It has been a place of disarray for the whole season, which is why it makes it such a big job for him to come in and turn it around, especially having no Premier League experience as well. I think it is absolutely massive.

“I think it is about getting the players onside, and that is a massive job, but it is an easy job as well,” the United Treble-winner continued.

“If you get the right way of talking to your players, they’ll come flowing back. They don’t want to be bad players, but they are just not being led right this season. It is filtering from the top of the club down.”

But despite this season’s struggles and huge changes expected this summer, Sheringham – who played for United between 1997 and 2001 – does not believe Ten Hag needs to recruit a large pool of new talent. Current interim boss Ralf Rangnick recently admitted that it would not be unrealistic to expect 10 new signings.

Sheringham, speaking to M.E.N. Sport in partnership with Genting Casino, added: “I don’t think he needs to sign that many players. There are already very good players at Manchester United, otherwise they wouldn’t be there. They just need to be loved a little bit, get their confidence back, get them playing as a unit and get them playing together.

“As I said, I think he has got the toughest job in the country next year, but it can be done and there are outstanding players there who are ready to play good football again. Nobody wants to be playing bad football.”
