Aces ‘clicked’ after ending long Wolves losing streak

- By PHIL LANNING

MATEJ Zagar admitted the new-look Belle Vue side ‘just clicked’ after finally ending their three-year Wolves jinx.

The ATPI Aces delivered a quite sensational display to beat their bitter rivals 51-39 at the National Speedway Stadium for the first time since May 2019.

Zagar reeled off a sublime fiveride maximum and it was revealed he told boss Mark Lemon to ‘f-off’ when he mentioned the poor record against Wolves.

The Slovenian said: “We walked the track before the meeting and it was a nice feeling that everyone was here. With a full team you definitely have more peace in your mind before the meeting.

“When we are all together we just click. We are strong. Any team can come and beat us, many things can go wrong.

“We try to be fast, great team effort, great team manager and fantastic people here. What else can you ask for?

“Every speedway rider has pressure. It doesn’t matter who you race and where and especially in front of a big crowd, you don’t want to hear any boos. We love to give good results.”

It was a strong all-round performance from the ATPI Aces and Jye Etheridge also returned to his old self.

He said: “Mark mentioned the Wolves record against us on track walk and Matej told him to f-off we are going to beat them!”

Boss Lemon has pulled off a massive coup by bringing Zagar back to the NSS. The former GP star has added such a massive mix of maverick and magnificent.

Lemon said: “We are a different team than the one that lost to Wolves in the League Cup and it showed. The result 51-39 shows we are a good team.

“It was a pleasing performance from my point of view. The racing was spectacular. We didn’t want to relax because we know how strong Wolves are.”
