1 A puff pastry cake named after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to thank him for his support, is proving a bestseller in Ukraine. It is topped with meringue resembling the PM’s hair and has a filling of apple and cinnamon topped off with ice cream. It costs around £2.60 and sells out daily at Zavertailo Cafe, a top Kyiv artisan bakery.

2 The Victoria sponge with cream and jam filling and dusted with icing sugar is one of the nation’s favourite cakes. Queen Victoria had a sweet tooth and Anna Russell, the Duchess of Bedford, began serving the cake to her for afternoon tea.

3 Teatime favourite Battenberg cake is said to have been created to mark the wedding of Queen Victoria’s granddaugh­ter, Princess Victoria, to Prince Louis of Battenberg in 1884. The yellow and pink squared almond sponge cake is held together by apricot jam and encased in marzipan.

4 Russian ballet star Anna Pavlova is said to have inspired the dessert pavlova when she toured Australia and New Zealand in the 1920. The sweet treat is made with meringue shells filled with fruit and cream.

5 French chef August Escoffie created peach melba at London’s Savoy Hotel in honour of Australian opera star Nellie Melba following her performanc­e of Wagner in Covent Garden in 1892. The dessert includes peaches and ice cream with a raspberry sauce.

6 Garibaldi biscuits were named after 19th century Italian general and patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi. The currant biscuit was first produced by UK company Peek Freans in 1861 after Garibaldi became a popular figure after he toured the country.

7 Frank Mars created the Milky Way and his son, Forrest, later went into business for himself and brought out the Mars Bar in 1932. The caramel, nougat and chocolate bar was first manufactur­ed in Slough in a rented factory before going on to become an internatio­nal success.

8 Classic French dessert tarte tatin is said to have been created by sisters Stephanie and Caroline Tatin. They were famous for their apple tarts, but legend has it that in the 1880s they accidental­ly put one in the oven upside down at their railway hotel kitchen in Lamotte-Beuvron. It proved so popular it became their signature dish.

9 Ben & Jerry’s named its Cherry Garcia ice cream in tribute to Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, below. Launched in 1987 it was the first ice cream named after a rock star. The idea came from a fan of the band and the dessert offers cherry ice cream with cherries and fudge flakes.

10 Milton S Hershey gave his name to his American chocolate bar company as well as the town of Hershey, where it was manufactur­ed. He opened the world’s largest chocolate manufactur­ing plant in 1905 and his model town included comfortabl­e housing for employees, cheap transport and a top schooling system.
