The University of Manchester’s Community Festival makes a welcome return
ON SATURDAY, JUNE 25, HEAD TO THE UNIVERSITY’S CAMPUS ON OXFORD ROAD FOR A FUN-FILLED FAMILY DAY OUT
WHATEVER your age, whether you’re interested in science or art, want to get hands-on and have fun, or just want to find out more about the work that takes place at the University, you can do all this and more at the University of Manchester’s upcoming Community Festival.
From 11am to 4pm on Saturday, June 25, the University is inviting friends, neighbours and the people of Manchester and beyond to go behind the scenes and discover the exciting work taking place there.
The free event has something for everyone - including hands-on activities, tours, live experiments, sporting challenges, creative arts, face-painting, a pop-up Manchester Museum, the chance to meet staff, students and community partners, and much more.
FREE PERFORMANCES TO ENJOY
Throughout the day, you can attend the following drop-in performances for free.
• Banging our Drums for Unity and Social Change: This performance will bring together professional musicians and academics to share their research about how music and creativity can contribute to social change. Drawing on the unique sounds and wisdom of West African drums and dance - you’re invited to join in!
• ‘The Mice go to the Cinema’ by the Huaxia Chinese Sunday School in association with the Confucius Institute. This short comedy is about a mouse kingdom underneath a cinema.
• The School of Arts, Culture and Language Jazz Ensemble will give a toe-tapping performance.
This will be appropriate for all ages and guarantees to brighten your day
• The Flash Bang Show, from
3pm to 4pm: Everyone’s favourite, this demonstration will open your eyes to the amazing world of chemistry that is all around us. There will be fantastic colour changes, flashes and the occasional bang, so hold on to your hats! This event is first come, first served.

• Go behind the scenes of the
Firs Environmental Research Station - visit the hidden greenhouses and find out more
about air quality research at the
University of Manchester.
• Join a heritage tour and journey
around the University’s fine neo-gothic architecture and sites of world-changing discovery, and hear how it developed from its pioneering origins in the industrial revolution to become one of the UK’s leading research universities. • Take a tour of the new home of Engineering and Materials; it’s a place like nothing else. They have torn up the idea of what a university building is and created a playground for engineers and scientists, truly open to the world around it in its design.
