Man is stabbed after row with group in street

- By THOMAS MOLLOY and AMY WALKER

A MAN was stabbed following an altercation with ten men in Manchester city centre in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police have been investigating the incident on the corner of Market Street and High Street.

Pictures and video from the scene show the CSI team investigating the area and bagging up evidence as part of their investigation.

A cordon was in place outside the new Tim Horton’s shop, as well as a blue and white tent which was placed on High Street.

It is understood that a man sustained stab wounds to the leg during the altercation and was taken to hospital for treatment. His condition is not thought to be lifethreatening.

Passers-by were left in shock following the incident. One shopper told the Manchester Evening News : “It’s terrible, so frightening. You just can’t go out anymore.”

Another said: “In my day, people fought with their fists not knives”.

And another added: “It’s typical, once it gets past midnight, it’s so dangerous.”

Reports earlier circulated on social media suggested someone had died. Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that this is inaccurate.

Councillor Pat Karney slammed the ‘appalling misinformation,’ saying: “People should not have the right to put up such cowardly nonsense.

“This was a fight among 10 males. We have got to take the knives off the streets of Manchester and we are looking to the courts to help us.”

In a statement, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly before 3am today (June 18) a man in his 20s was pursued by a group of males and was stabbed on Market Street in Manchester city centre.

“He is currently in hospital being treated for stab wounds to his legs that aren’t believed to be lifethreatening.

“No arrests have been made but enquiries are ongoing to identify the offenders.”
