THEN & NOW UNITED V SPURS
Welcome to Then and Now, where each week we compare images of Manchester streets, landmarks and buildings from bygone days with how they in more recent times
OUR main image this week shows the Charity Shield match between United and Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday, August 12, 1967. Played between the previous season’s league champions and the FA Cup winners, the Charity Shield is the traditional curtain-raiser to the new football season.
The Reds topped the league while Spurs won the cup.
The annual match now takes place at Wembley, but used to move around the home grounds of participating clubs.
Our photo shows Spurs goalkeeper Pat Jennings foiling an attack by United’s John Aston while Joe Kinnear blocks Brian Kidd. Watching on the left is Spurs defender Mike England.
The game ended in an exciting 3-3 draw which meant the two clubs shared the Charity Shield for six months apiece.
Bobby Charlton scored twice for the
Reds with the third goal coming from Denis Law. Frank Saul and Jimmy Robertson were on target for Spurs.
But the most extraordinary goal was scored by Spurs ‘keeper Jennings. He punted the ball downfield only for it to bounce in front of United ‘keeper Alex Stepney, then over his head into the net!
The Charity Shield heralded a brilliant season for United who went on to become the first English team to win the European Cup after beating Portuguese side Benfica 4-1 at Wembley.
Our recent image, from August 8, 2015, shows United in action against Spurs in the 1-0 Premier League victory at Old Trafford. Memphis Depay, left, is battling with Ben Davies. ● Publishers iNostalgia have come up with a special offer to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee month.
