THERE’S NO SUMMER SLOWDOWN FOR NEW RESTAURANTS
HOLIDAYS might be on people’s minds, but there’s no rest for the hospitality folk, with a raft of new openings coming this month. Here are some of the best new places to check out in August...
New Century (Late August tbc) New Century will finally be throwing open its doors later this month, with the folks from Now Wave breathing new life into the concert hall upstairs, and a host of first rate food traders in the space downstairs. Fine dining don Adam Reid will be unveiling his new sandwich concept The Butty Shop, vegan Vietnamese icons Bahn Vi will be bring broths and baguettes, while BaoBros23 will be sorting out the buns. Cannot wait for this.

Yum Cha (Open now)
Who doesn’t get childishly excited at the thought of stuffing their face full of dumplings? Arriving from Liverpool, Yum Cha is coming to the Kampus development imminently courtesy of brothers Adam and Neil Wan, and will be bringing bundles of steamed and fried joy. Named after the Chinese answer to brunch, popular among the Cantonese, there will also be roast meats, big plates and teaming bowls of noodle soup. Heaven.

The Stables (Open now)
An intriguing one, The Stables is a ‘canteen-style’ restaurant and bar, which will be offering a amazingly cheap £5 lunch, in a smart, industrial setting among the new developments around the former Granada Studios. You can expect anything from pies and curries to a full ‘chippy lunch’ too. Just a wander from Deansgate and Spinningfields, seek it out from this week.

SakkuSamba (Open now) Blending South American grill vibes with flavours from Japan - not actually on the same plate, as it turns out - the huge SakkuSamba, on the site of the former Artisan restaurant, has landed with a bang this month. There are dancers, there is cherry blossom, and you can eat as much as you like for 45 quid.

Slice (Open now)
Slice was doing slices long before the city’s recent pizza boom. These
Roman-style squares of deliciousness were worth making a beeline to Stevenson Square for, but it sadly shut its doors in 2019.
Well, now it’s back, and it’ll be slinging slices from its new home in Arlo’s on Hilton Street, including its classic broccoli and sausage, and a range of great pizza bianca too.

Handlebar (Open now)
Bikes, booze and brunch (oh, and coffee and cakes, for some additional alliteration) are the order of the day at Handlebar, a vibrant and handsome new cafe and bike workshop in Fallowfield. On the site vacated by the Font bar, this is the perfect spot for bike chat and beers, with glorious vintage jerseys adorning the walls.

Stretford Canteen (Open now)
After years as a supper club, Stretford Canteen has finally found itself a home. Clinging to the side of the soon-to-be transformed Stretford Mall, this family business will be serving up classic French cuisine, with a British twist. Think terrines with pickles, and fresh radishes dipped in sharp vinaigrette.
