AN INQUEST has opened into the death of a man who was killed in a hit-and-run after suffering a medical episode.

Nathan Louis James Hayes, 32, was waiting for a bus on Worsley Road North in Walkden, Salford, when he had a medical episode ‘sat up in the road.’

A passerby helped get Mr Hayes to safety and asked him for a phone number so they could call for help.

As they went inside and made the call, Mr Hayes was struck by a car while lying in the road, Bolton Coroners Court heard.

The vehicle fled the scene. A man has since been arrested, Det Con Nicola Veitch-Lancaster said.

Mr Hayes, from Bolton, was pronounced dead after being taken to Salford Royal Hospital and his cause of death was recorded as multiple injuries. Opening an inquest into his death, area coroner for Manchester West, Prof Alan Walsh, clarified the provisional findings of an investigation by Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Unit.

Det Con Veitch-Lancaster, a police coroner’s officer, said that on July 20 Mr Hayes was waiting for a bus at a bus stop near to the junction of Worsley Road North and Alexandra Road.

“Mr Hayes had a medical episode sat up in the road,” she said.

“A passerby got him to safety and got him to pass them a contact number of somebody they could call.

“Whilst inside their house the passerby telephoning the number, Nathan Hayes was struck by a vehicle as he lay in the road.

“The vehicle did not stop.” She said the vehicle and the driver have since been located and a male has been arrested. That same day, after being conveyed to Salford Royal Hospital, Mr Hayes was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem report prepared by Dr Wilson, a forensic pathologist, concluded that Mr Hayes died from multiple injuries.

“An investigation is still ongoing,” Det Con Veitch-Lancaster said.

The inquest was adjourned for a review hearing on November 4.

Prof Walsh requested GMP to provide an update about the investigation at the next hearing.
