Joe Mercer and england

-

OUR nostalgia quiz this week focuses on former Manchester City manager Joe Mercer’s unexpected stint as England football manager in 1974. He was offered the job in a caretaker role after the dismissal of 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey. Mercer was in charge of Coventry City at the time after an acrimonious exit from Maine Road in 1971 which saw his car parking space and desk removed while he was still at the club.

Mercer was succeeded in the England post after seven matches by former City player and captain Don Revie, who had carved out his own successful managerial career at Leeds United.
