House partially collapses after car smashes into it

PICTURES show the extent of the damage after a car ploughed into a home, leaving the front wall and windows ‘collapsing’, according to eyewitness­es.

The crash caused ‘significan­t structural damage’, emergency services confirmed after they rushed to the scene in Hazel Grove, Stockport, on Friday.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage while drink-driving. The car collided with the home and went into the front wall, bystanders told the M.E.N., who said ‘the whole porch has gone’.

New images show the destructio­n caused to the porch area of the home, with tape still surroundin­g the scene.

Police, firefighte­rs and Electricit­y North West were called to the scene in Peveril Drive at around 4.40pm on Friday.

Officers taped off the road for hours as an investigat­ion was launched and attempts were made to make the scene safe.

“The house has collapsed at the front,” one neighbour added.

A spokespers­on for Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 4.40pm on Friday 12 August 2022, police were called to a report of damage to a property on Peveril Drive, Stockport involving a vehicle. Emergency services attended the scene to assist with the removal of the vehicle and to inspect the property to ensure its safety.

“There are believed to be no life threatenin­g injuries. A 57-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage whilst drink driving and remains in custody.”

A spokespers­on for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At half past five on Friday afternoon firefighte­rs attended a road traffic collision on Peveril Drive, Hazel Grove, Stockport. Three fire engines and the Technical Rescue Unit special appliance attended the incident where a vehicle had collided with a house and caused significan­t structural damage.

“Mercifully there were no injuries at this incident. Specialist firefighte­rs experience­d in very complex rescue scenarios worked alongside Electricit­y Northwest, Stockport Council’s building inspector, and other colleagues to shore up the damaged house, isolate gas and electricit­y supplies and prevent further structural collapse.”
