Paddleboarder’s body found in lake after four-day search

-

THE body of a missing man from Rochdale has been found pulled from Ullswater in the Lake District. The tragic discovery was made on Thursday afternoon.

Search teams had spent four days trying to locate the man, who was in his 20s, after he is believed to have fallen into the water while paddleboarding last Sunday.

He was with a friend close to the ferry stop on the lake when he got into trouble.

Maryport Rescue coastguards were called out at 1.10pm and were joined by Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, the Ullswater ranger the Whitehaven coastguard team and North West Ambulance Service.

Emergency services were called after friends of the man, who police say was from the Rochdale area, and others on the lake were unable to locate him after he became separated from his board.

Cumbria Police has confirmed the body of a man has been recovered from the water. Formal identification has yet to take place but the missing’s man family was told of the discovery and the death was not being treated as suspicious.

In a statement, a force spokesperson said: “The body of a man has been recovered from the water late this afternoon (August 11) by search teams who have been leading a search at Ullswater this week. The search team were deployed after a man in his mid-20s and from the Rochdale area was reported to have got into difficulties whilst paddleboarding on Ullswater on Sunday (August 8) and was unaccounted for.

“The incident occurred at around 1.10pm on Sunday, in the vicinity of Aira Point, near to the ferry stop. The family of the missing man have been made aware of developments in the search.
