THEN & NOW ENGLAND CALL-UPS

Welcome to Then and Now, where each week we compare images of Manchester streets, landmarks and buildings from bygone days with how they look in more recent times

-

OUR main image this week shows three happy Manchester City footballers who’ve just learned they’ve been called up for the England squad after a tough training session.

The year is 1968 and the three City players taking a breather are, from left, midfield dynamo Colin Bell, striker Frances Lee and winger Mike Summerbee.

Bell won his first senior England cap in a 3-1 victory over Sweden in May 1968. His attacking play helped inspire goals for Martin Peters, Roger Hunt and Bobby Charlton of Manchester United.

Bell was also a member of Sir Alf Ramsey’s England squad for UEFA Euro 1968. The tournament was won by Italy, but England finished third after defeating the Soviet Union in a play-off.

Lee made 27 appearances for England from 1968 to 1972, scoring 10 goals. He played in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, becoming the first English player to receive a card in a World Cup tournament.

Summerbee made his England debut against Scotland in front of 134,000 spectators at Hampden Park in February 1968. The 1-1 draw helped clinch qualification to the UEFA Euro tournament.

Our modern image from May 2015 shows two more internationals from City – centre-back Steph Houghton and forward Toni Duggan, both players for Manchester City Women’s Football Club.

Duggan made her senior England debut in 2012 and has played 76 matches, scoring 22 goals.

Houghton, first picked for the England senior team in 2007, has won 121 caps for the Lionesses – scoring 13 goals.
