Remains of baby were found buried

TOYS and flowers have been left in a heartbreaking tribute to the baby whose remains were found at a house in Wigan. Officers made the devastating discovery on Marsh Green last week.

Greater Manchester Police says it was called by a ‘partner agency’ and responded to concern for a person’s welfare, before the remains were found. Five people, aged between 20 and 70, were arrested on suspicion of concealing a death and unlawful burial.

They have all since been bailed. On Marsh Green yesterday morning (April 15), at least a dozen bouquets of flowers had been left at the scene in a colourful tribute to the tiny victim.

Cuddly toys – including an elephant, a rabbit and a dog – have also been left for the baby, along with a hand-written tribute which reads: “Rest in peace little one. Sleep tight in the arms of the angels where you will be loved and cherished as you should have been on Earth.”

Forensics officers combed the scene for evidence on Saturday, while shocked neighbours came to terms with the tragedy. Police say the incident is believed to be ‘isolated.’

Chief Superintendent Clare Jenkins, from GMP’s Wigan district, said on Saturday: “This is a truly heartbreaking discovery, and I do not underestimate the impact that this news will have on the local community. I would like to reassure you that we have several teams of officers and specialist resources working diligently to find answers.

“You will likely notice an increased presence of our officers throughout the next week, if you have any concerns or want to share any confidential information, please do not hesitate to speak to them. In the coming days we will know more about the circumstances surrounding this incident, but we are confident that this is isolated, and there is no threat to the wider public.

“At this stage we are keeping an open mind, and we will provide updates as soon as we can.” GMP has been approached for an update.
