PREM CLUBS CIRCLE FOR GREENWOOD BUT A MOVE ABROAD IS ‘MORE LIKELY’

- By TOM CAVILLA

AT LEAST two Premier League clubs have reportedly enquired about signing Mason Greenwood from United this summer.

Greenwood has caught the attention of several clubs after performing well during his loan spell at Getafe, with sides in Spain, England and Italy all being linked.

The Telegraph has claimed Atletico

Madrid are ‘keeping tabs’ on the 22-year-old, with Juventus and Lazio also said to have registered interest. At least two English top-flight clubs are also claimed to have entered the conversation, though an overseas sale is viewed as ‘more likely’ according to the above report.

Greenwood’s future at Old Trafford has been a sensitive topic since he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in January 2022. In February last year, the Crown Prosecution Service announced that said charges had been dropped after key witnesses withdrew and new material came to light. Greenwood denied the allegations.

United are said to be seeking a fee in the region of £40-45million for the academy graduate, who was loaned out last year amid public backlash that arrived on the back of the suggestion Greenwood was set to be reintegrated into the first-team squad.

Challenged on how United would approach Greenwood’s future this summer back in February, Sir Jim Ratcliffe refused to offer a definitive answer.

“I can talk about the principle, I’m not going to talk about Mason,” he

said. “I’m familiar with it. The principle is the important one because we will have other issues going forward. You’re dealing with young people, they’ve not always been brought up in the best of circumstances, who are very talented, they’ve got lots of money and they don’t always have the guidance they should have.

“We need to understand what the facts are – the real facts, not the hype. Then we need to make a fair decision in the light of the club’s values, that’s what we need to do and that’s how we will do it.

“We’ll make a decision, yes. And we’ll justify it one way or another. All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach it. Is he the right type of footballer? Is he a good person or not?”

Greenwood has proven to be a success at Getafe since joining the Spanish club in September, scoring ten goals and providing six assists in 32 appearances.

Getafe’s president Angel Torres has said on the record he would like the United loanee to return to the club on loan, though is of the view Erik ten Hag’s side are likely to seek a permanent sale.

Such a scenario would see them ruled out of the race.
