Fans help out racer’s family
Dan Hegarty’s insurance failed to pay after Macau GP accident
The family of a road racer who was tragically killed at last year’s Macau Grand Prix have set up a crowdfunding page in his name after his life insurance firm refused to pay out on his policy, and it has already raised more than £12,500.
Hegarty, a former front-runner in the National Superstock 1000 championship, made his debut at the Isle of Man TT in 2011, setting fast times as a rookie before going on to impress as a member of the factory Norton team in 2013. Improving year by year, he then took the Privateers’ Trophy in 2016.
But after an incident at Fisherman’s bend on the seventh lap of last year’s Macau Grand Prix, he tragically lost his life.
However, Combined Insurance – with whom Hegarty held a life insurance policy – have written to the family to tell them their claim has been rejected.
“No benefit or benefits will be paid under this policy for any bodily injury sustained or loss incurred whilst the insured is outside Europe, the United States of America, Canada, Australia or New Zealand,” the letter read. “We are aware that Mr Hegarty was in Hong Kong at the time of the accident and we unfortunately must advise that given the above exclusion, we are unable to consider the claim.” Following this, Hegarty’s brother, Joe, has set up a crowd-funding page online to raise money to be put in a trust fund for Dan’s two young children, ten-year-old Evan and threeyear-old Flynn.
“Daniel was a talented, committed motorcycle racer but firstly and always he was a devoted father to his two young sons,” his brother said. “After Daniel’s life insurance refused to pay out, we have created a Just Giving page to raise money for a trust fund for the boys to help them in the future where unfortunately their father can’t.”
