‘THERE’S A SPECIAL VIBE, IT’S A BIKER’S PARADISE’
The first stop on our British tour of great cafes reveals a biking mecca and great grub
With the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales and Peak District all within an hour’s ride, Squires Café Bar could well be the most perfectly placed bike meeting point in the country. It’s been a popular hub for the local biking community for over 60 years and offers topnotch facilities for the 1000 bikes (and then some) that regularly pack out their Bike Nights throughout the summer. You could argue that location is everything, but it’s the atmosphere at Squires that makes it truly special. “It’s incredible, you meet new people every time,” says Liam, who used to cycle in on his pushbike before taking his test and becoming the proud owner of a Suzuki SV650S. “You leave your troubles at the gate and whatever’s going on outside is forgotten when you’re here.” And he’s right, there is a special vibe. We found everyone approachable, friendly and ready to talk motorcycles. Having been battered by hail on the way up, we opted for the Full English and when our number was called were presented with a plate piled so high that it left little room for disappointment. At £5.95 it’s superb value for money and with a turnaround of only a few minutes, there was just enough time for a few slurps of tea before tucking in. The brew is Yorkshire, naturally and also available by the pint. We asked the members of the Widows Sons Masonic Riding Association for their opinion and they gave it a unanimous 9.5/10. “We have customers that come in every single day that we’re open,” says owner Dave Marsh. “Although we make a huge effort in running the place, it has a history that money just can’t buy.” And it’s ultimately that tradition, carried across generations, that makes Squires Café Bar such a unique destination and a worthy contender for our Golden Sausage Award.
