MCN expert helps reader fix his ER-6F
Brakes, suspension and fuelling cured after forensic check
MCN’s resident bike expert Bruce Dunn has been working with motorcycles for over 30 years: fixing, riding and competing on machines of all shapes and sizes. That all means his depth and breadth of experience is second to none and he’s ready and waiting to check over your bike.
Dr Know’s patient this week is Sam Ingrey’s 2011 Kawasaki ER-6f. Sam uses his Kawasaki for his commute from Didcot, Oxfordshire, to West London and bought the middleweight twin with just 1500 miles on the clock. Sam has now racked up a total of 17,550.
Back when Sam purchased the bike, he was an A2 licence-holder, meaning he had to make some modifications in order to comply with the law.
He said: “The first thing I had to do to it was restrict it. I bought a 35kw restrictor kit and fitted it myself. It was quite straightforward and there was an ECU plug-in and a plate that simply attached to the throttle body to prevent full throttle movement. “I have now attained my full licence and have removed it all to gain full power from the bike. One of the things I noticed straight away was a big improvement in mpg, which was a bit of a bonus as I got a faster bike with better fuel economy. “As well as my commute into West London, I use the bike to attend football matches. I’m an FA referee, so I put my referee kit in a 40-litre bag and bungee it to the back of the ER and travel all over the place.” Sam has also added some practical accessories to his bike, such as an aftermarket screen, however there are still a few issues on which Sam needs Dr Know to give his opinion.
