When it comes to biker meeting spots there are few more established than Box Hill in Surrey Located along the A24 Old London Road, it’s been a magnet for motorcyclists since the first tea hut opened there in 1920, but these days most people know it by the name of the on-site café and this week’s Golden Sausage Award contender, Ryka’s. Despite the allure of signature burgers, we opted for the breakfast and were well and truly satisfied, especially eating al fresco in Ryka’s picnic area, which also provides a great opportunity to mingle. “It’s good food at good prices,” says GSX650 rider Richard Harris. “The facilities are clean and it’s a great place to meet and hang out.” With its long-standing significance as a meeting place it would be easy for Ryka’s to get by just resting on its laurels, but for owner and ex-publican Mike Sheppard reputation is everything. “We think of ourselves as custodians,” says Mike, who runs Ryka’s along with his wife Gill and their three daughters. “Although we’ve only owned it for three years, I’ve been a customer for 22 years and I know this place means a lot.” Indeed it does. Drop in on any Sunday and you might just see regulars Len and Maureen peoplewatching from their usual table by the window. They’ve been coming for over 50 years, which gives Jamie Thorne and Sharn Pilar something to aim for. “We’re here for date night,” smiles Jamie. “It’s a great place to ride to together and the food is quick, simple and effective.”
