Ducati’s base-level Diavel to get a flashy new parts in 2019 revamp

Ducati set to give base bike the XDiavel’s motor and frame

-

When Ducati unveiled the Diavel in 2010, we were bowled over by the combination of its cruiser stance with sporty handling and superbike engine. Now spy pics show Ducati are working on a new bike, which is set to be the fastest yet.

Face-twisting power

Looking at the side profile, it’s clear the engine has changed. Although it’s obscured by camouflage tape, the steel trellis frame has changed and the exhaust routing mimics the higher-spec XDiavel rather than the current model. This points to the 1262cc Variable Valve Timing Testastretta engine from the XDiavel. Peak power and torque figures remain virtually unchanged, but the motor will have a stronger midrange and it will also help Ducati stay ahead of the emissions curve.

The current Diavel has traction control and ABS but with the new motor, we expect it will take the XDiavel electronics. It was thought the next Diavel may gain the V4 from the new Pangiale, but Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali has hinted that the Multistrada will be next in line for the V4 powerplant.

Quality components

What else goes with a new frame and engine? Brand new suspension obviously. There are currently three Diavel models, plus two XDiavels but even the special editions come with Marzocchi suspension. This new model (which we assume will be called the Diavel S) will have fully adjustable Öhlins suspension front and rear. We’re expecting Ducati to unveil it in November, with the finished bike to follow in early 2019 for around £18,500.

All this points to the 1262cc XDiavel engine
