New Tiger has first outing

Try one of Triumph’s (five) new 900s for size at the London Show

-

Triumph’s new Tiger 900, in all five forms, gets its first public outing at the London Show. Though based on the old Tiger 800 it’s been completely redesigned and has its sights firmly set on being king of the jungle in 2020. The now 900 triple (actually 888cc) sees peak torque rise to 64ftlb from 58ftlb.

Power remains at 94bhp but is delivered lower in the rev range, giving a more meaningful mid-range punch. There’s also a new firing order which adds character and is also claimed to aid traction on and off-road.

The bikes’ new modular frame and bolt-on rear subframe are lighter than that of the previous 800, giving a total weight-saving of up to 5kg, depending on model.

There are the two off-road biased models, the Rally and Rally Pro, with spoked rims, plus a road-orientated base 900, GT and GT Pro, all with cast wheels. All benefit from a bigger 20-litre tank (up from the 800’s 19) and the latest Brembo Stylema calipers. The new 900 should feel more accessible, too, with a narrower seat and handlebars 10mm closer to the rider and a more upright riding position for long days in the saddle. Each also has two seat height positions: 810mm-830mm (on the road versions) and a taller 850mm-870mm on the Rally models. Jump on them at the show and see what you think The base 900 costs £9500 but no prices have yet been released just yet for the other new models.
