Why you’ll see McG on the grid of the Ducati TriOptions cup this April

‘ANYONE WHO’S GOOD WILL BE DOING SOME RACING AT BSB’

So, I’m going to be racing in the Ducati TriOptions Cup which is run at BSB rounds. I’ve been thinking about it for a while and I’m pulling it all together now. But I have to admit that I’m already thinking to myself now – ‘why am I doing it?’ That said, I need something to get my teeth into, otherwise I end up just doing stuff around the house, which is fine but it doesn’t get you ready to race.

I’m going to run the team myself out of my place and my mate Andre Compton is going to race with me.

Andre is a professional speedway rider and he actually sponsored me for a couple of years. He’s a good rider and he’s keen to do it. It might be great or it might be s**t, but at the end of the day anyone that is going to do any good on the roads this year will be doing some racing in BSB – that is the bottom line. There’s no way I’m going to head to the North West, pull my Kawasaki out of the van for the first time and do any good, unless I’ve been doing a load of riding. End of story.

Even after racing for 30 years, that first ride at the start of a new season is like ‘f ***** g hell!’ It feels so fast.

My priority is road racing and short circuit just puts more meat on the bone. At the moment I’m not thinking I’ll do any Superstock racing in BSB, but we’ll see how I feel after the TT. The good thing is that the team owner Pete Extance has said I can do as much or as little as I like. At the end of the day my deal is with Pete, not Kawasaki, and Pete is happy with me riding and doing what I want.

We’ve got some work to do to get everything in place, but I’m looking forward to it.
