Second big boxer coming

● Spy shots reveal a big bagger is inbound from BMW

-

BMW are working on a second R18 model to go alongside the naked bobber they have been teasing for some time. Although rumours of a second big crusier model have been circulating for months, this is the first time we have seen a machine that appears to be close to productionready – and the pics reveal what a high-tech machine it will be.

At the core of the bike is the same 1802cc flat twin that BMW have already unveiled, which produces 89.8bhp @ 4750rpm as well as an earth-shattering 116.5 ftlbs of torque. We also know it’s mated to a six-speed box, for easy cruising. The chassis also appears to be the same, or at least very similar, to the standard R18 we’ve already seen, with a steel cradle frame holding the engine in the middle. The back end has a ‘softail’, with integrated final drive just like the original ‘30s bikes, while the rear mudguard forms the subframe. Where it begins to differ from the naked machine is the bagger accessories. Up front there’s a huge batwing fairing that is packed full of the latest tech. As well conventional speedo, tacho and fuel gauge, there’s a huge TFT screen. This will likely act as the info-tainment centre, handling navigation duties as well as music.

Look closely at the front of the fairing though and there’s a telltale little box that suggests the bagger will have adaptive cruise control fitted.

For more long distance comfort there are a pair of lower leg fairings, as well as a large rider and pillion seat. The bagger has two hard panniers (or bags) fitted as standard but we expect there will be a luggage rack and top box option available. There’s been no word from BMW on when we can expect to see either this on the standard R18, however we suspect they will unveil it in August, ahead of the Sturgis motorcycle rally in America.
