‘It does 60mpg and it’s been super-reliable’

- NIGEL CARTWRIGHT bought his Tracer 700 new in 2018. After two years and 10,000 miles he’s still smitten...

“Five years ago I’d given up riding on the road. I own a heavily modified R1 which was becoming so track-focused that it was frustrating at low speeds. Then I tried the new Tracer 700 and I realised that it gave me everything I wanted from a road bike, so I bought one. I bought the GT model but I’ve only got the seat, screen and mainstand fitted, I never bothered with the panniers. “Now approaching 10,000 miles, it’s been super reliable. At about 3500 miles the righthand switchgear started sticking so that was replaced under warranty. It’s been ridden all year round and the finish is holding up well, just one little bracket has started to go rusty but I’ll just touch it up with some paint. “I’ve upgraded the front fork with Hyperpro progressive springs (£230) and heavier 15w oil which has resulted in a much classier, expensive feel. It’s an easy job to do at home, especially if you have a centrestand, and takes about two hours. I’ve also put a Hyperpro progressive spring on the rear shock which has reduced the harshness. “The standard Michelin Pilot Road 4 tyres were replaced at about 8000 miles as they had started to square off. I’ve replaced them with another set as they work really well in all conditions. I’ve upgraded the brake pads too –

I had some EBC Double-H lying around at home from my R1 (the Tracer uses the same pads) and they’ve given a much more aggressive bite, which I prefer, especially as the front forks work better now. The old pads still had plenty of life left in them, though.

“It’s mainly used for commuting, and it does a realworld 60mpg. A group of us went up to Scotland and the Tracer was absolutely perfect both on the motorway trip up there and the three days riding around the Highlands.

“Working as a technician in a dealership, I get to ride a lot of other bikes, but in all honesty the Tracer 700 is still perfect for my needs. I’ll have a go on the 2020 model as soon as we’re allowed to ride again, but it’ll only be for research purposes – my bike’s definitely a keeper!”
