The 750 golden era was the first half of the 90s, and Yam’s YZF is the best of its time. When launched this was the peak of sportsbike design, with suspension quality, brakes and handling ahead of its 750cc rivals. Its problem was Honda launched the CBR900RR just before and stole the headlines. Find a good YZF and you get the power of a late 600 but with on-road flexibility, secure handling and a cool old-school riding position, iconic looks – and loads of ace BSB memories. Prices for good ’uns are rising – buy now.

Buyer beware

Clutches pack in at 20,000 miles, and though reliable the inline four engine can get through a drop or three of oil. Listen for tell-tale grumbles from an engine that’s not been kept topped up. Though the chassis is a fine thing (later examples have the best rear shock) there are patchy bits of finish, not helped by advancing years: fasteners will be corroded and seized, wheel paint will flaking off and the six-pot front brakes will be sticking, especially if it’s seen road salt. Muck and crud can also cause electrical problems, as the rear wheel deposits unpleasant filth over the connectors and components located under the seat. Beware pricey ‘restored’ bikes with mint plastics on a tired chassis.
