‘Four years? He’s got off lightly…’

McGuinness has no time for riders who break drugs rules

-

Just when you thought the year couldn’t throw up any more drama, it’s been a mad week in the racing world. We’ve got a new world champion with Mir, Cal is retiring to become a test rider, Dovi’s taking a sabbatical and Iannone has been given a fouryear ban for taking drugs.

The drugs thing isn’t to be taken lightly, is it? It’s just not acceptable. I think he’s got off lightly; I’d have banned him for life. I think his biggest problem was that he didn’t hold his hand

up. If he’d shown some remorse he might have got a shorter ban, but instead he came out with a load of waffle and that didn’t help. Now he’s got to take it on the chin and hopefully in the future people will understand that this is what you get if you break the rules. I honestly don’t know what he was playing at. People are also saying that he was doing it for his modelling career! He’s not the most handsome bloke in the world, is he? I’m not saying I am either… I don’t know what mirror he’s looking into, but I could do with borrowing it.

I still like to follow him on

Instagram because his life is another world to mine, but I can’t help but think that if he came to Morecambe he’d just get filled in. But seriously, I think it’s a shame; a shame we’ve lost a character from the sport. When he was on the Ducati it was definitely engaging TV. I loved his antics, but the decision to ban him is correct and shows that there can be no drugs in the sport.

Now it opens up the debate on who will get his ride in 2021 because up until now Aprilia have been holding on for him to return.
