McPint asks where the next Brit MotoGP star is coming from

It’s a sad day that we don’t have a top Brit in the premier class

- McPINT

It’s not 100% certain just yet as we don’t know exactly if Bradley Smith will be racing, but it’s a sad, sad day when there are no Brits in MotoGP I’m still reeling that Cal won’t be on the grid next year and it worries me that there is nobody obvious to replace him. With all due to respect to Bradley, we need a Brit on the right bike capable of doing something. The trouble is we haven’t got rows of Moto3 or Moto2 riders lined up to go into MotoGP. If you look down your list of BSB riders

‘We need real investment in racing, we need an academy’

for someone that could make their mark in MotoGP, then I’m sorry, and there is no young Brit ripping through the WSB paddock either. Redding had a go and while I really like John McPhee, he’s not the full package.

Don’t get me wrong, we have good riders but none that warrant a Repsol Honda ride.

The managers in MotoGP are unique. Some of the decisions they make leave me scratching my head, but they know what they are on about. Take this year: Binder won a race, Oliveira won two and Mir took the championship. But when they got signed I was wondering if bosses were looking at the same riders I was looking at. What it shows is that no matter how much experience you have trying to be a pundit, you can still be wrong. From a British point of view, maybe the thing to do is take on an inexperienced hotshot and throw him in at the deep end with a load of backing. The winner of the British Talent Cup, for example. We need investment, we need an academy, we need to be following the lines of what they did to produce Lewis Hamilton.
