BMW step up the step-through sales pressure with new scoots

BMW update the commuter-friendly C400X and C400GT

BMW have updated their mid-sized C400X and C400GT scooters with more tech and a new Euro5 friendly engine.

The idea has remained the same, so they’re both midsized engine scooters but with maxi-ish proportions. In the case of the C400X, it’s got the squinty eyes of a GS for a sort of ‘urban adventure’ look, while the C400GT is more traditionally styled.

Both are powered by a 300cc single with a peak power of 33bhp and torque of 26lb.ft. Not bad figures but down on the full-sized maxi-scooters such as the Yamaha TMAX. For 2021 the single has had a bit of an overhaul including a new catalytic converter, new engine management system, new throttle and airbox changes. Paired with the new throttle design is a ride-bywire throttle that BMW call ‘e-gas’, presumably so it sounds fancy to prospective owners coming from four wheels. Along with the update to the engine, BMW have revised the auto clutch that sits between the motor and CVT, which is designed to make engagement more consistent and prevent some issues with the clutch opening that the old model occasionally encountered. The electronics have had a little update too, including revised settings for the traction control. BMW say the system has been designed for ‘significantly lower friction values’. In non-engineering speak, that means the traction control does a better job at keeping you safe when it’s pouring down and you’re skating over manhole covers while nipping between gaps in traffic. The new traction control can also recalibrate itself when you change the tyres, which is a nice bonus. There have also been a couple of other changes, including to the braking system. The front brakes now have a better feel at the lever, while the travel and bite point of the front and rear brake levers have been matched, so they both activate at the same point. Under the seat the lights have been moved to the lid rather than the sides so they’re not blocked by your shopping, while the front storage compartment now has a USB socket for charging a phone. That is a nice feature given how reliant on a phone connection the dash is for navigation.

The C400X starts at £6545 while the higher spec C400GT model is available from £7290. Both are available to order now. and are likely to arrive in dealers by July.

?? ?? 1 Electric avenue Ride by wire and new traction control should work together and make the C400 even safer for newer riders
3 Lots of room There’s 31l under the seat, or 45l with the Flexcase, which lets you increase the storage while parked
2 Back in black
Just like the big GS, you can tick lots of options on the C400s, including a ‘triple black’ style pack for the GT
4 Bigger is better BMW ditched the C650 a while back but with the segment hotting up, a new one seems likely
