Litelok Core Moto £199 ‘Tough – but not ideal on the go’
Tested by Dan Sutherland on four bikes
I’m a full-time worrier and the thought of some toerag making off with my pride and joy in the middle of the night sends a shiver down my spine. To ease my troubled mind, I’ve tested countless chains and disc locks, from tiny pocket-sized devices to hefty chains that are a real workout to muscle around the garage.
The £199 Core is said to offer something in the middle, with Litelok claiming it to be up to 50% lighter than a conventional chain, with the flexibility to be portable.
It’s found a home on at least four bikes in our time together and can be yours in a choice of black, orange, or red – with the ability to clip them together for more length, should you need to.
Available in three standard sizes and scoring a Sold Secure Gold award for theft protection, it’s a simple case of unlocking the central clasp and threading it through the front or rear wheel. The keys are particularly small and can go missing easily in a cluttered garage, so be careful if you’re clumsy like me.
The lock is fitted with a washable outer neoprene skin, which has never moved round over the fastener during use – something that can happen with traditional covered chains. It’s a good job that outer fabric is washable too, as it loves nothing more than collecting black splodges of grease from the back wheel.
Greasy gunk aside, I can’t fault the spec and I have confidence in the product when I use it. The trouble is – despite the name – it’s not that light and the rigidity of the lock makes it very difficult to carry with you on the go.
Even the smallest size is 2.45kg and I have now reverted to just using it at home, as I cannot get it to fit in a rucksack on the go. Litelok say it will fit in a topbox, but if you’re like me and don’t use one, it becomes a bit of a one-trick pony.
