Mackenzie Drive launches

Knockhill Circuit honours racing legend

-

Three-time British Superbike champion and 500cc Grand Prix podium finisher Niall Mackenzie has been honoured with a road named after him at Knockhill Racing Circuit in Scotland.

The road leading into the 1.3-mile Fife racing venue will now be known as Mackenzie Drive and was launched following the Stirling rider’s 40-year connection with the track.

“The very existence of Knockhill paved the way for my fantastic life, never mind the incredible fun and memories over the past 40 years with you guys,” Mackenzie said during the road reveal. “The family is blown away and chuffed to bits with ‘Mackenzie Drive’ so this really is the icing on the cake.”

Niall attended the opening ceremony alongside son and former British Superstock 1000 champion, Taylor. He was also joined by circuit Managing Director, Jillian Shedden, and Director of Events, Stuart Gray.

“It's our pleasure,” Shedden said, “a small token to thank you for all you have done for us and to mark the amazing achievements of all of the Mackenzie family.”

Niall Mackenzie is President of the Knockhill Motor Sports Club and hosts trackday events at the circuit across the year. He is also active in the support of up-and-coming Scottish motorcycle racers.

He achieved seven podiums and a pole position across 104 races in the 500cc two-stroke Grand Prix premier class in the 1980s and 90s, riding for iconic teams including Marlboro Yamaha and Lucky Strike Suzuki.

He then returned to the UK to win three BSB titles for Yamaha between 1996 and 1998.
