Our friends aren't electric
I read with interest how electric bikes are the future and enjoy the constant enthusiasm for the next generation of transport (MCN, February 3). I have been designing and manufacturing small battery vehicles for 30 years and have come across most engineering solutions to battery powered vehicles. Before we get too hyperventilated about this power source, there are a few things to remember. Energy density for a similar size of battery has only increased by around 8% in 30 years. The breakthrough is the weight reduction, so the range will not significantly increase in the near future. Secondly, charging is always going to take time (in hours) and lastly the batteries in the BMW C-Evolution (or any other electric powered bike of similar capacity) are probably around £6k to replace after five years, so you may as well throw it away after that time. Electric vehicles are great for short trips, but as for the future of travel don’t hold your breath. Now, where’s that jet pack we were promised 20 years ago?
