TT 1917-1927: The road works

-

The road surface during the TT’s second decade consisted of gravel and deep ruts, especially over the mountain section. Between 1911 and the early 20s the track differed from the modern Mountain course in that it turned right at Cronk Ny Mona and rejoined at St Ninian’s. In the first race after the Great War in 1920 the present layout was introduced via Signpost and Governor’s to the current start and finish. Two years later the 37.73mile Mountain course as we know it today was finalised and a year later the Sidecar TT was introduced for the first time. With the solos being divided into Lightweight (250cc), Junior and Senior classes the first 60mph lap came in 1924 and 1926 saw the 70mph barrier broken by Jimmy Simpson.
