Bad boy Anthony Gobert had been banned from riding in America after failing a drugs test and Reve Red Bull Ducati team boss Ben Atkins was in talks to bring him to BSB. The Aussie had taken eight wins in WSB and just left 500 GPs where he’d taken a few top tens. He did come to BSB, but not until 2000 – as a replacement for Steve Hislop.
