RUN ON OR REPLACE?

We’re told that 500 miles is the average lifespan of a running shoe, but we all go through footwear at different rates. Use these signs to judge when you need a new pair

The outsole tread has become smooth and worn

There are wrinkles in the midsole, or the once-springy foam now feels hard when you prod at it

The forefoot no longer springs back into shape when folded

The shoes feel different on the run – less comfortabl­e and grippy, or harder underfoot
