ORANGE GOBLIN
The British metal veterans are celebrating 25 heavy-as-fuck years
Did you ever think when you started Orange Goblin that you’d be here a quarter of a century later?
Ben Ward (vocals): “Honestly, no. We never had any real aspirations outside of recording a few songs and doing a few local shows. It’s incredible how it’s snowballed.”
What do you think it is about Orange Goblin that has seen you last so well and still mean so much to people?
“I think that we are very honest and genuine. There are no pretensions or egos but at the same time we acknowledge the fact that we are a good band that have a strong catalogue of music and always deliver the best live show that we can.”
What’s been the hardest thing for you guys in particular about the coronavirus situation?
“Like everyone, we miss being able to be with friends and family but we’re fortunate that we have our wives, girlfriends and, most importantly, our health. The whole music industry is in freefall due to the pandemic and with no end in sight it’s really hard to call but we all miss rehearsing together, sharing a few drinks and getting creative in the studio.”
How are you planning to celebrate 25 years together? “Well, those plans have been dashed by the current global situation but we are still doing what we can. Maybe a 26-year anniversary, if you will? We’ve also found some recordings that we have shaped into a very good live album, which we will release digitally, called Rough & Ready, Live & Loud.”
What would you say to fans and fellow bands who have been struggling with the effects that COVID-19 have had on the music industry?
“The phrase ‘We’re in it together’ is more profound now than it’s ever been. People’s livelihoods are at risk. But it isn’t just musicians, it’s everyone from the music industry through to small businesses and the self-employed, so we all have to try and help each other out. If you can, support the little guys. Donate to grass roots bands and venues, buy things online from independent businesses, buy food and beer from small distributors, and let’s carry that on when this is all over.”
