Atmospheric deliverance from Darkspace wanderer

Although sole member – and one third of Swiss cosmic black metallers Darkspace – Wintherr has been creating vast, icy landscapes of sound as Paysage d’hiver since 1997, this is his first official full-length. Im Wald is dense and complex; electronic undertones filter into the instrumental interludes with repeated motifs that add to the meditative atmosphere.

It’s easy to lose yourself in the two-hour runtime. The choral catchiness of Stimmen Im Wald and the cold groove of Weiter Immer Weiter showcase different sides of the project while Alt

builds on pure atmospheric black metal and distant screams. The closing So Hallt Es Wider mirrors the crunching snow sounds and howling winds that Im Winterwald started it off with, offering a clear vision of loneliness – a journey through snow-covered trees to find your own personal sanctuary. ■■■■■■■■■■
