FOOL’S GHOST
This stirring post-rock duo are turning turbulent times into something extraordinary
FOR MARRIED COUPLE Nick and Amber Thieneman, Fool’s Ghost’s hauntingly cinematic post-rock compositions are a musical extension of their intimacy.
“Using music as a way to get things out of your system is a huge part of our lives independently,” explains Amber. “Because we have that shared passion it adds another layer to our relationship.”
“It’s a way of writing music I’ve never experienced before,” affirms Nick.
Recorded back in 2018, the two-piece (Amber on keys and vocals, Nick on everything else) are frustrated, with years of hard work and imminent touring plans cut short by COVID-19. “We’re both cranky when unable to do music,” jokes Nick, Amber laughing next to him. “It’s especially hard when there’s so much uncertainty. It’s sad we weren’t able to share this music with more people.”
Natives of Kentucky, a state bordering the north/south divide of the United States, the Black Lives Matter movement is currently hitting home hard. “In the US it’s a very hard time to even look at music – it seems a trivial thing to worry about,” Nick continues. “Right now we just want to support our community.”
Times are hard, but for such moments come magical records to salve the wound. Their debut, Dark Woven Light, is just such. “At the time of its writing we were dealing with a family death,” says Nick. “Writing music on that raw edge together became therapeutic, making something beautiful out of tragedy.”
Dark Woven Light proves to be the perfect record for quiet contemplation during a period of international mourning.
