Metal’s finest teamed up with rap legend Darryl ‘DMC’ Mcdaniels for a special collab

When we found out metal and hip hop were colliding in a way not seen since Anthrax and Public Enemy’s Bring The Noise, we got excited. Anthrax drumming legend Charlie Benante recruited his former bandmate/ current Volbeat guitarist Rob Caggiano and Suicidal Tendencies bassist Ra Diaz, to get together with Darryl ‘DMC’ Mcdaniels for a medley of RUN-DMC’S songs. It was all socially distanced and all in the name of the charity Music Unites, which supports music education worldwide.

“We wanted this to hold more weight and have more of a purpose than a blast on social media or whatever”, explains Rob. “The world is broken right now, it needs help. There are so many things pulling us apart in many different ways. The beauty and power of music is that it can actually unite people and bring them together. It’s powerful magic and we all need that right now.”

Charlie sent his drum track to Rob, who started “messing around with it” and putting his ideas on top. He sent a rough mix back to Charlie, who passed it on to Darryl for the vocals, before Rob mapped out the final guitar arrangement. “As soon as D did his vocals, the track came together like fire!” Rob exclaims.

Meanwhile, Rob and the rest of Volbeat have been working on new music, and he’s been spending some quality time with his mum and dad. “It’s obviously a scary time for the world right now but it’s not all doom and gloom”, he says. “Stop watching the news and start being productive with your time!”
