Malaria drug’s working for me, says Bolsonaro
BRAZIL’S president has claimed he is recovering from coronavirus due to taking hydroxychloroquine – the anti-malaria drug that has not been proven effective against Covid-19.
Jair Bolsonaro, who has opposed lockdown measures and dismissed the virus as the ‘sniffles’, announced on Tuesday he tested positive.
But in a video later posted on Facebook he claimed the unproven medication was helping him recover, saying: ‘Today I’m a lot better, so certainly it’s working.
‘We know today there are other remedies that can help fight the coronavirus. We know none of them have their efficacy scientifically proven, but I’m one more person for whom this is working. So I trust hydroxychloroquine. And you?’
More than 66,000 Brazilians have died from Covid-19 so far and at least 1.6million have been infected.
