‘EXTINCT’ GORILLAS ARE BACK FROM DAD

NO WONDER this silverback looks every inch the proud father – he is living proof that a type of gorilla which was on the brink of extinction is breeding again.

These photos of a family of Cross River gorillas were taken by the Wildlife Conservati­on Society in Nigeria’s Mbe mountains.

By 2014, it was feared that there were fewer than 250 of the gorillas left, making them the world’s rarest great ape. John Oates, of the City University of New York, said: ‘We know very little about what is going on with reproducti­on with this subspecies, so to see many young animals is a positive sign.’
