Blues move is the right Wern

CHELSEA new boy Timo Werner has described the Premier League as the best in the world and insists he is glad he chose Frank Lampard’s side ahead of reported interest from Liverpool.

The Germany striker joined the Blues in June after they paid his release clause at RB Leipzig, where he had spent four years, moving for around £48million.

Speaking to the English press for the first time yesterday, Werner revealed he had been determined to play in England and saw his transfer as a step up in class from the Bundesliga.

‘I wanted to come to the Premier League because it is the world’s best league,’ said the 24year-old, who scored 35 goals for club and country last season, his 28 in the league making him the second top scorer behind Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.

‘I don’t want to compare each league but the Premier League has better football, great facilities, great grounds. You play someone like Brighton away and the match is shown all around the world and maybe the Bundesliga doesn’t have that.’

After starting their campaign with a 3-1 victory at Brighton on Monday, Chelsea visit champions Liverpool on Sunday, with whom Werner was also strongly linked.

‘When I decided to leave Leipzig, I spoke to different clubs,’ he added. ‘I don’t want to talk so much about other clubs because I decided for Chelsea. There are some other clubs like Liverpool, they have a great team, but Chelsea was the best decision I could take, not only because of the style of football, also what they have shown me.’

Werner was impressed by Blues boss Lampard (pictured) as he considered his next move.

‘He texted me and showed me how he wanted to play,’ said Werner. ‘It was really important Frank gave me a system that fits me very well. He is a very nice, calm guy who made it clear what he wants from me. ‘You are not only a player to him but a person. Not just a footballer. That was one of the reasons I came here.’
