McTOMINAY SETS UNITED ON THEIR WAY WHILE CALVERT-LEWIN TREBLE MAKES LIGHT WORK OF HAMMERS

SCOTT McTOMINAY, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba all scored as an impressive Manchester United won at Brighton again last night, this time to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

United came away from the south coast last Saturday with an outrageous 3-2 Premier League victory, courtesy of a 100th-minute penalty, awarded by

VAR after the final whistle. There was none of that theatre this time but this 3-0 win will be very satisfying indeed for Reds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United nearly scored early on when Odion Ighalo rounded Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele, but shot into the side-netting. The first goal came just before half-time, McTominay powering a decisive header into the net from Juan Mata’s pinpoint free-kick.

Dean Henderson had to produce an outstanding reaction save from Leandro Trossard, but the visitors sealed victory with a stylish finish from Mata and deflected free-kick from substitute

Pogba. Elsewhere Everton continued their excellent start to the season, beating West Ham 4-1, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring a fine hat-trick.

Calvert-Lewin’s calm finish opened the scoring at Goodison Park and Richarlison had a goal ruled out for offside as the hosts dominated.

After the break, Robert Snodgrass smashed in a superb equaliser from 20 yards. But Everton then ran away with it, Richarlison’s shot deflecting in off Declan Rice, and Calvert-Lewin netting twice more from close range.

Manchester City also had a comfortable night, winning 3-0 at Burnley.
