Just keep distant! And that includes you students, too
Cosy: Boris Johnson, Matt Hancock and Michael Gove, and Coventry uni students
To those who want to have the hospitality industry, including pubs, shut down in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus and stop the rising of the number of infections and deaths – I’m 100 per cent sure none of you work or have a relative or friend working in this sector. What would we do with all the thousands of people and their families who depend on this line of work?
In terms of sorting out this awful and uncertain situation we are living in, we need a balance. The economy is as important as health.

I’m in total disbelief at what I saw with regard to the pictures of Coventry University students flouting Covid-19 healthcare rules with their partying (Metro, Thu).
If you students think the virus is a hoax, then let me lead you around an ITU unit and a mortuary to prove how real and serious this is. Why don’t you volunteer to help the NHS? But no PPE required for you – it’s a hoax, remember.

Why are government cabinet members in your photo not social distancing on their way to the House of Commons (Metro, Thu)?
Christine Smith, St Austell
Let’s hope that any further Covid-19 restrictions will allow people living on their own to mix with at least one other household indoors, so as to avoid mental health issues. With winter coming, the use of gardens will not be an option.
As long as schools and universities are open and pubs are crowded, this virus will continue to spread. As usual, it’s the people who take care who will be the ones suffering most because of the recklessness of others.

In response to the Boris Johnson fan from Airdrie (MetroTalk, Thu), nobody is expecting the prime minister to be perfect, but one does expect some level of competence.
Neil Dance, Birmingham
Give the prime minister a break – Boris has been given advice left, right and centre and is doing his best. How would the people who are criticising him like to make the decisions he has to make? No doubt there are plenty who think they know best but how many would take the responsibility?
Sheila, Glasgow
Why are some train companies still only using four-coach trains that are packed with people standing and sitting next to each other? What about social distancing?
Mick, Essex
Having been on the receiving end of a mouthful of abuse and aggression for having the temerity to ask why a fellow public transport passenger was not wearing a face covering (they sat next to me without one), l’d like to know when the authorities are going to take this seriously. I’ve never seen someone challenged, let alone fined.
Phil, Kent
People complain about others being selfish for not following the health rules but we’ve already had months of restrictions and most people enjoy the company of others.
