THE UPS AND DOWNS OF LOVE GAVE ME MY VOICE

BECKY IS THRILLED IT’S FINALLY HER TIME TO CALL THE TUNE

ECKY HILL should give her fella a writing credit on her debut album after revealing her tracks are filled with the ups and downs of their romance.

After years of lending her powerhouse vocals to other people’s hits, the Better Off Without You singer says the record has been a ten-year slog.

‘Basically, it’s about the last decade of my life,’ the 26-yearold, who first rose to prominence on series one of The Voice in 2012, told Guilty Pleasures.

‘I’ve been writing it for about that amount of time, so it’s a real labour of love for me.

‘It’s a therapeutic journal but in music form.’ And the content is largely inspired by her lover – who she reunited with last year after they took a time out.

‘As great as my relationship is now, it’s fair to say it’s been pretty rocky in the past, which has been the inspiration to a lot of my music,’ she added. And she assured her man: ’I always just try to be as honest as possible about it (our relationship).’

After dropping a taster of things to come with new single Space, Hill says it’s time to reflect on how she ended up calling the shots on her music career after some false starts. ‘The highs have been reaching the charts with songs that I have written and sang, and the lows would probably be getting dropped from my first record deal,’ she admitted. But relishing the silver lining she said: ‘That being said, I learned so much through the lows and I’ve worked hard to come back from that and start my own label.’

Loving being her own woman and boss, she said: ‘Always feeling secondary and just being a voice rather than known as the song writer and artist... it’s been a challenge to even get music videos of most of the features I’m on, so I’m pleased people are starting to recognise me as an artist in my own right.’ What’s next for her and her pet bull terrier? ‘World domination,’ she answers.
