Just Eat on a roll as orders scoot to 46m
TAKEAWAY orders through Just Eat have soared in the UK, with the online platform delivering 46.4million meals to households in the last three months.
Just Eat Takeaway.com said the growth helped the company accelerate away from its competitors, aided by signing up McDonald’s and Greggs to the platform.
Business was boosted as more families opted to eat in during the national lockdown, with 123million orders placed in the first nine months of the year – up 27 per cent on the same period in 2019.
And trade has continued to benefit as restrictions on eating out tighten in the face of a second wave of the pandemic.
Globally, the Dutch-based business – which reportedly paid rap star Snoop Dogg £5.3million to front its summer ad campaign – racked up orders of 151.4million in the quarter to the end of September.
CEO Jitse Groen said the group had ‘widened the gap’ with key competitors.
‘We have continued to generate strong adjusted Ebitda (profits excluding oneoff costs), while investing aggressively, and are well-positioned for autumn and winter, our traditional growth season.’
The boost came despite the government’s Eat Out To Help Out scheme, which Just Eat said had failed to dent orders.
A buying spree of rivals – including US platform Grubhub – has cemented its position as the world’s biggest online takeaway service. Orders increased by 43 per cent during the third quarter, with Australia its fastest-growing region.
