Covid is not a game of roulette, Mr Burnham
Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham was playing roulette with lives by refusing in the first instance to take the government’s deal of £60 million in extra assistance (Metro, Wed). The area will now receive that sum anyway, as announced by Boris Johnson at PMQs.
I, and I’m sure many others, thought Burnham’s previous responses to this pandemic were good but now I wouldn’t give him the time of day.

The government can’t negotiate a deal with a mayor in the north of England but it claims it can negotiate with other countries. Piffle.

It must be incredibly tough for Andy Burnham to sit back and let Boris (inset) make the decisions he can’t. It’s so much easier to let Boris be the bad guy and then wag your finger from the sidelines.
Ben, London
Thank God we have a prime minister with the backbone and strength to stand up for the good of the country. Not being pushed around by Andy Burnham or the EU is the reason Boris is in power. Keep it up, Boris, and we will all be over this sooner rather than later.
Lyndsey, Sheffield
When Boris and his cronies are finished, Britain will no longer be Great or Britain.
Ruth, Nuneaton
Boris was aware that his landslide election victory put him in a probationary period, particularly with northerners. Well, he’s blown the trust shown to him in so many ways. It’s time to go for Boris and co. We’ve had enough of you all.
John Lewis, Liverpool
It’s true what AS says, not everyone can wear a mask or visor (MetroTalk, Tue) and it was simplistic of me to assume that, but surely the number of people unable to wear one or the other is very limited. Too many people wear neither and it is for this reason that we are having more lockdowns. I’d be interested to know AS’s suggestions on how we can control the spread of this virus while taking into account the medical needs of the few.
Why does it bother me so much that there always has to be a selfish minority that defy the rules – that ten per cent ish who will not conform?
I’m referring to the mask noseexposers and the chin-sinners (masks swinging from their ears), topped off by the don’t-cares (you can tell them apart from the ‘exempts’ by the look of defiance).
On every Tube train the proportions are the same.

In World War II there were areas of the UK less obviously affected than others. However, everyone was subject to the restrictions that were imposed. The ‘togetherness’ spirit of those years was widely remarked on. Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be happening in the current pandemic.
