SEVENTH HEAVEN

HAMILTON STILL DREAMING AFTER MATCHING SCHUEY’S HAUL

- By ADAM HAY-NICHOLLS

AN EMOTIONAL Lewis Hamilton is far from finished making Formula One history, claiming he feels like he is ‘just getting started’ after sealing a recordequalling seventh world title.

The 35-year-old produced another brilliant display to win the rain-hit Turkish Grand Prix and draw level with Michael Schumacher’s all-time haul.

Hamilton has re-written the record books and staked his claim to be considered among Britain’s greatest ever sportsmen. Alongside his seven titles, Hamilton has more wins (94), more poles (97) and more podiums (163) than any other driver. ‘I know often I say it’s beyond my wildest dreams but my whole life secretly I probably have dreamed as high as this,’ said Hamilton, who was reduced to tears after crossing the line.

‘It felt so far-fetched. I remember watching Michael winning those championships... seven is just unimaginable. That’s for all the kids out there who dream the impossible. You can do it.’

Asked where the limit might be – eight, nine or even ten titles – Hamilton replied: ‘There is just no end to what we can do together, me and this team. I feel like I’m only just getting started, it’s really weird. I feel physically in great shape and mentally.

‘This year has been the hardest year for millions of people. I am really hopeful for a better year next year and I would love to stay [with Mercedes].’

Despite recent hints this might be his last season, Hamilton appears ready to agree a new deal. ‘Definitely [it] is something we do need to get on to,’ he said. ‘I wanted to wait until the job is done. Probably over the next weeks. But we will get it done, I’m sure.’
