A very different No.10, what with Cummings going

-

■ Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s special adviser Dominic Cummings has followed his former Vote Leave communications colleague Lee Cain in being booted out of Downing Street (Metro, Mon).

This is a palace coup by any other name. Johnson’s family are all leftleaning champagne socialists and we are expected to believe that he’s the one that’s different?

Now he has appointed another champagne socialist as his press secretary in Allegra Stratton (she of The Guardian newspaper and the BBC), having ‘allowed to leave’ two staunch opponents of the socialist EU project in Cummings and Cain.

So, get ready for the ‘Newer Labour Party’. This might also explain why all those northern Labour supporters switched their allegiance. Oh, and we can now kiss Brexit goodbye.

Fred Nicholson, Essex

■ Boris Johnson is the wrong person to run the country in the middle of this pandemic. Sure, he’s very good when everything is going well and he can whip up people in the euphoria of Brexit. Now, however, we need someone who can take control, someone we can have faith in.

It seemed to me that Mr Johnson was just the spokesperson for this government and the real decisions were made by Dominic Cummings. Mr Johnson was just wheeled out to tell us what was happening in that jovial manner of his.

■ After Lee Cain and Dominic Cummings leaving and rumours of a bun fight in

No.10 at the weekend, I’m not surprised Boris has decided to isolate himself from the world having come into contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19. The virus has provided a convenient excuse.

Tony Howarth, London

■ Can we please stop giving publicity to this man Dominic Cummings? He was unelected, divisive and seemingly unaccountable. His influence has done far more harm than good. In my view, Cummings has weakened the authority of the prime minister.

Let’s now draw a line and move on in a more positive, optimistic and inclusive way.

Robert White, St Helens

■ So if the rumours are true, it seems Boris Johnson’s fiancée, Carrie Symonds, has finally managed to sack the prime minister. I bet Boris is furious to see him go.

David Hyatt, Highgate

■ With the departure of Dominic Cummings from No.10 and borrowing from the procedure used when MPs resign, it might be said that Mr Cummings has now been appointed to the position of Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Barnard Castle. Ken Thurgood, Upminster

■ Now that Dominic Cummings has left No.10, the question arises, how will PM Boris Johnson cope without his special adviser?

Can anybody recall Lord Charles pursuing a solo career after the retirement of Ray Alan?
