Ivan ends terrible Fulham record to shock the Foxes

- By JOHN PAYNE

IVAN CAVALEIRO ended Fulham’s penalty curse as they climbed out of the bottom three with a shock win at Leicester.

Ademola Lookman had already fired the Londoners in front before Cavaleiro ended a run of three glaring spot-kick misses.

Although Harvey Barnes pulled one back, Leicester missed the chance to go level on points with Tottenham and Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

It might have been different had Leicester not struck the woodwork twice in a matter of seconds in the first half. Youri Tielemans’ first-time strike hit the post and Wesley Fofana somehow blazed the rebound against the bar from six yards.

But Fulham took the lead on the halfhour when Andre-Frank Anguissa slipped in Lookman to beat Kasper Schmeichel.

Lookman celebrated by lifting a Senegal shirt in tribute to former Fulham midfielder Papa Bouba Diop who died aged 42 at the weekend after a long illness.

The play continued after Bobby Decordova-Reid went down under Christian Fuchs’ challenge in the box but VAR intervened and referee Simon Hooper awarded a penalty after viewing his screen.

Cavaleiro, who missed embarrassingly when a spot-kick cannoned from one foot onto the other as he slipped against Everton last week, buried any demons.

It was Fulham’s first 2-0 away half-time lead for almost nine years in the top flight and Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers threw on Barnes and Cengiz Under.

Fulham still had chances, the impressive Ruben Loftus-Cheek seeing a shot deflected over while Schmeichel denied Lookman his second with 16 minutes left.

Leicester looked bereft of ideas until Jamie Vardy’s knockdown was hammered home by Barnes with four minutes left.

But Fulham held on to inflict the Foxes’ third defeat in four games, with Brendan Rodgers’ men now facing a 3,200-mile round trip to Ukraine for Thursday’s Europa League clash with Zorya Luhansk.
