FIRM FINISH SINKS SPURS

- By NICK METCALFE

ROBERTO FIRMINO headed a priceless last-minute winner for Liverpool as they beat Tottenham 2-1 in a riveting game at Anfield to move three points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Mohamed Salah’s deflected first-half effort put the hosts in front but HeungMin Son equalised soon after. Both teams missed some excellent chances, before Firmino had the final say.

The night began with Liverpool paying an emotional tribute to former manager Gerard Houllier, who died this week. And how the Frenchman would have enjoyed a game like this. Liverpool deservedly went in front after 26 minutes. Curtis Jones set the chance up with a fine run, with a shot from Salah taking a deflection off Toby Alderweireld and flying in. Seven minutes later, against the run of play, Spurs were level. A delightful pass from Giovani Lo Celso put Son through, and he finished in style.

Hugo Lloris saved well from Firmino before half-time but it was Jose Mourinho’s team who had some really big chances after the break. Steven Bergwijn flicked one effort just wide, and then fired a low shot against the post, while Harry Kane headed over from point-blank range. At the other end, Sadio Mane blasted against the crossbar. This was a genuine thriller between these title rivals on Merseyside. And with time almost up, Andrew Robertson’s corner was powerfully headed into the net by Firmino. It felt like a big moment in the title race. Elsewhere, Leicester missed the chance to go second in the table, losing 2-0 at home to Everton.
